Gum disease is a major factor in tooth loss and can take place cause by various reasons. Dentures that are not properly fitted, tobacco, poor nutrition and the presence of food particles left in the mouth increases the risk of plaque build up. Untreated gum disease can trigger certain medical conditions. Gum disease and swollen gums can be experienced by anyone but more likely by older people. Swollen gums can be experienced by anyone at any age, and unfortunately when it comes with the seniors the condition is treated as being part of the aging process. Swollen gum in elderly is a dental condition that requires superior home treatment and professional attention as well and it can be reverse when detected early.
Swollen gums in older people can be associated with the presence of dentures whether is a partial replacement for teeth that have been lost or actually used to replace all teeth. Older people should not be suffering from swollen gums; swelling sometimes takes place due to unfitted dentures. Dentures do not start fitted incorrectly, for over time the shape of the mouth changes thus dentures start to fit improperly. Gums may swell due to pressure from the dentures causing the gums to be irritated and inflamed. With other cases, swollen gums in older people are caused by food debris caught in between the dentures especially after eating. Pain can be manageable at the early stage of swollen gums, but with delayed treatments swelling can progress and pain becomes worse and the risk of infection increases leading to periodontitis.
Superior oral care should be observed, that includes regular brushing of teeth and flossing. And with older people having dentures, it should be cleaned every after meal. Regular dental examinations should be included with your oral care regimen, for it is very vital with elderly to ensure that any dental condition is caught early.
